Nous devons avoir la volonté d'abandonner les distractions internes et externes pour nous centrer. La motivation est essentielle pour être attentif, mais elle ne suffit pas toute seule.

L'oreille doit être capable de se concentrer sur les sons que nous avons choisis comme principaux. Elle doit aussi exercer un contrôle corporel qui nous permet de réguler notre énergie physique (nous maintenir assis, par exemple).
